Shorter speeches means more time for commercials (i.e. they can make more $).

The show draws better ratings beginning to end if the big awards are scattered throughout or come later, building suspense and keeping viewers tuned til the end.

If the winners talk too much, he show goes too long and too late, losing viewers and setting up the questions: Have the big awards earlier (giving up on the suspense and the ability to hold viewers)? Or, listen to everyone blather on, knowing the big awards will not be viewed?

The program would run way too long if each winner had a long acceptance speech.
