Not only would we lose a major source of goods that we import, such as cars and electronics, but we would also lose a market for many of the goods we ship out. Consider the world we live in without electronics. Yes, the US does make electronics too, but not on the scale that would be necessary to keep up with demand. Thus, those willing to pay the highest price would get the product, and those who couldn't would get nothing.

While this may seem a bit exaggerated, we would see a large setback in our standard of living if we decided to ditch one of our bigger trading partners.

Anytime a nation cuts off foreign trade, generally speaking, they're worse off.
