My father, as a 40 year veteran in Oceanography with a PhD, makes around 140K. That is being near the top of the field, published textbooks and such, Chairman of the department...etc, etc. Some of that comes from outside consulting and other grants.

I graduated last spring with a masters in physics. You would definitely want a PhD if you plan to teach in a university. I've been applying for tons of teaching positions at community colleges and it seems that even they prefer people with PhDs and experience if they can find them. Pay rates depend on how much experience you have and what state you live in. I live in an agricultural state (South Dakota) with not very many technical jobs, so I'll probably need to move if I want to find a decent paying physics related job. There are a lot of options for a physicist with a masters degree, depending on your specialty. I chose mathematical/theoretical physics, so there isn't much I can do besides teach. From what I've seen, there seems to be a lot of need for medical physicists. I'm sure jobs in that field pay quite well. I remember meeting one fellow with a PhD in medical physics who had a six figure salary. Imagine it...doing physics with medical doctor's pay! Otherwise you could probably find a research job. My advise: go for the PhD if you can because it will pay off in the long run.

If you want to be a university prof in physics, you'll need a Ph.D unless you want to work at a community college. Most profs make between $60,000 and $80,000 a year, maybe more if they have tenure or are the head of a dept.
