Although Buddy did a few fast numbers like Brown Eyed Handsome Man, Rave On and Bo Diddley, for the main part he sang easy listening numbers like Peggy Sue, Heartbeat, and Listen to Me.
Elvis on the other hand sang things like Hound Dog in 1956, Jailhouse Rock in 1958, King Creole in 1958, to name but a couple. Then again, Elvis wasn't beyond singing sentimental songs - Old Shep, Are You Lonesome Tonight, Crying in the Chapel.
Having lived through that era - got the T-shirt! - I love em both. I have every record Elvis recorded and every one but one of Buddy's so I hope I am qualified to speak.
But to answer your question, I think Elvis has got to be the king of Rock & Roll.
(Are you listening Oasis?)

I remember when... Ah, those were the days.... :-)

The Prince's of Rock-N-Roll, those who were the leaders that introduced it, included Buddy Holly, Bill Haley, and, of course, Little Richard. I could name off about a dozen more that should be mentioned.

However, Elvis is definitely the King. His ability to hold on to the Top Ten leadership consistantly proves his regal power.

Who else could have the power and popularity to have the same record go "gold" twice? For those who don't know, his recording of "Don't Be Cruel" went gold and then the DJ's began playing "Hound Dog" which was the flip side and it to went gold.

Well I saw Buddy when he came to England and he was great. As Elvis never came here I can't judge his live performance. But he had a great respect for Buddy, and it's true that when Buddy Holly died ,so did the music.

chum Holly. He became the real blueprint for what might grow to be rock n roll. He sang, performed lead guitar and wrote his own songs. The very image of chum status together with his Fender is the image rock n roll rests on on my own for my area. Elvis became between the 1st real popstars interior the experience he did no longer write his own fabric and became time-commemorated generally as a showman and for his image. i like Elvis too, yet chum to me is the place Rock n Roll peaked. Chuck is neglected as properly for my area, each physique of his licks have been lifted.
