Virtual memory goes as follows: Suppose you have an operating system with many tasks running. The tasks want to have a certain memory address or a certain number of memory blocks. But how do they know what blocks are taken by the other tasks? Well they have virtual memory that allows them to assign data to any block they want in the address space. Then the operating system assigns the virtual address to a physical address depending on what all the applications want.

When your PC says virtual memory is running low, it means that you have used up all of your physical memory (ram) and disk swap space (which is an area assigned that is roughly 2x the size of your ram.) the os then takes up more of the hard drive in order to assign more memory locations to map to. Your computer then runs really slow because hard drive access is many times slower than memory access.

Beka, I just fell out of my chair because of the answer I just read below. Go to Wikipedia to get an answer to understand.

Virtual Memory is space on your computers hard drive that your computers uses as memory if the memory onboard your motherboard gets full and needs more memory. You can leave it alone size wise if you want to. The computer will automatically manage the size. Go to Wikipedia for more information.
