Oh - All of Heidelberg is wonderful to see - but the most unique attraction is the "schloss" which means "Castle". Its at the top of a hill - so, start working out on the stairmaster NOW before you leave - because it's one heck of a walk up to the top! (As we were young and in shape!) There's no elevator -the only way to get to the top is to walk. There are some stairs, and parts that is a ramp - but it's a steep, steep walk. However - it's soooooo worth the effort once you get to the top. Breath taking views (and I'm not just saying that because you'll be out of breath from the walk up). There are these HUGE wine barrells that when you stand in front of them - you look like a tiny doll because these barrells are about 100 feet tall! Really cool. There is also a "pharmacy museum" up there - if that floats your boat. I totally recommend the schloss/castle. Then go to the main street and pick a cafe to have a glass of wine and people watch. Enjoy!

1) Castle. Heidelberg Castle (Schloss) is beautiful, but the view of the old town (altstatd) is even better. There are two wine/beer kegs. One is big, but the other is huge 3+ stories high. Don't make the mistake of thinking the first is the one. Make sure you take the long walk to the end of a "wall" to get the best view.

2) The bridge is nice, make sure to check out the monkey bronze statue with the mirror. Cross the bridge and get a view of the castle from the other side.

3) Philosopher's walk. This is a 1 mile walk from across the river. It is about the same height as the castle height and cuts the mountain side. You get beautiful vies of the castle and city. This can be tiring, but worth it. It's called the Philosophers walk for a reason.

4) Take a break and get a cappuccino at the market platz if the tables are out and enjoy the scenery and people walking about. I also like eating at the Galleria at the BitzmarkPlatz. It is at the top floor, nice view. You don't see the castle, but the other mountain is pretty too.

That should be enough for 12 hours. There are other small quirky things (student jail, nazi stadium at top of mountain across from castle, Konigstuhl top of mountain same side as castle, etc..) but the one's listed are my favorites. Have fun!!!

I visited Heidelberg castle a few years ago. It was so picturesque. You could see the red rooftops of the town, the river, church spires...wow. Also, the castle has one of the oldest wine cellars. Walking on top of one of the oldest and largest barrels was really great. Okay, the wine was good, too.

Definitely the castle - and then you wander through the medieval town, it is enough to absorb the beauty of the place. You could also climb up the tower of the church or cross the bridge to the rich neighborhood of the city.
