I went to Spain for a year for study abroad. Well when I was gone I felt very alone and homesick. When I came back I felt like I no longer belonged and again alone because people couldnt understand where I was coming from. I have several friends whove done this and think that you either get used to the detached experience and learn to like it or you want to be around your family etc in familiar places after you come back.

I used to study in Australia for 7 years.. Initially i was all excited in studying and living alone abroad alone for the period of time..

Homesick only set in after 2 years that I had lived in Australia. I really missed home a lot.. And because when you are alone in a foreign land, you need to be on your guard.. Not everybody can be trusted.. I had learnt it the difficult way.. There was a few betrayals and you really see the different characters and people from all walks of life..

Of course there are a lot of times where you really need to make your own decisions and to be self-disciplined..

There will be ups and downs and that's where you need to know how to cope on your own when times are down. When you are back home, you still have your loved ones to count on in times of trouble, but that's different when you are alone overseas..

You really need to be strong and you also need to know to be sensible or have the right judgement to differentiate right from wrong..

Do you know of any friends or relatives that will be in the country where you will further your studies? If you are still deciding whether to further your studies, my advice is to GO for IT!! The experience that you will gain will definitely be invaluable and will definitely be very different versus studying and working in your hometown..

Good Luck!

I have had 5 students from other countries Japan, Thailand, Germany, Brazil, and have sponsored students from Sweden, Korea, Switzerland. Anyway the most difficult thing is homesickness in the beginning, You have to have a very positive attitude the better you speak the language the easier your transition.
It is a really experience and one that makes you mature. Do It!
