Sara's softball team can be divided into four groups. 1/2 of the players are strong hitters 1/4 are good pitchers 1/8 like to play the outfield and 2 are catchers. If each player is in only one group how many players are on the team and in each group?

Since one of the groups is 1/8 of the whole, your final number will have to be divisible by 8.
The total also has to be an even number, so that the total can be divided in half without splitting one of the players in two.
I'd start by testing to see if the number of players in the first group (1/8 of the team) is 2, since that's the lowest possible even number.
If 1/8 of the Team = 2,
then 1/4 of the Team = 2/8, or 2 x 2, and
1/2 of Team = 4/8, or 2 x 4
2 outfielders
+ 2 x 2 pitchers
+ 2 x 4 hitters
+ 2 catchers
------------------
= Total of Team members
You can check to see if you're correct by seeing if the total of the team members can be divided by eight.

4/8 + 2/8 + 1/8
7/8
That means the 2 catchers are the remaining 1/8. Thus the team consists of 16 players.
1/8 = 2
1/4 = 4
1/2 = 8

Sounds to me like there are 16 players. 8 in the strong hitters group, 4 in the good pitchers group, and 2 each in the outfield and catchers groups.
