Excuse my ignorance, but why does the Priest, (Robert de Niro) hold the book, titled “the count of Monte Carlo” in his hand as he lies? I was told this before..........but forgot!

Isn't it so he won't be swearing on a Bible that he's telling the truth? He feels obligated to help the boys, but he is still a priest, and isn't going to go that far.

Also, "The Count of Monte Christo" is a story about revenge, as is "Sleepers."

The priest isn't the one who holds the book, it's held by a friend of the 2 men on trial for murder. The book represents to the men on trial how revenge was taken against the guards who abused them and their 2 friends when they were boys.

when he's on trial? no, i dont think he had any book in his hands.....
wasnt that the only time he lied? i think he lied to the judge when the boys were sentenced to that place, but i dont recall that scene. i think he just told the main boy about it before he went on the bus.
