Not necessarily. Just because people are confident in their own taaste, doesn't mean that they are philistines. Some people might be very sophisticated in their tastes, and also very ceertain of their own judgment in arts and culture. But it's possible that if somebod is veyr firm in their beliefs about what is good art, that they may simply be digging in and sticking with a liimited range of art that is thoroughly familiar to them. In that case, they may be rigid in their taste and not giving themself a chance to try out nad experience less familiar art and to see whether they like it. Only you can determine whether, in our eyes, your boy friend is a Philistine or not. If you are honestly not sure, than maybe you've got to look at yourself and ask whether you have a degree of uncertainty as to what your own attitude to art is and are challenged because you feel that your boyfriend's certainty (no matter how well founded) is out of tune with other people whose approval you think should be courted.

Your boyfriend is dead? There hasn't been any Philistines in thousands of years unless you want to call the Palestinians Philistines. I'm not sure what that has to do with art but I'm an artist and I have been for well over 20 years. Knowing what you like is what art is all about. We favor what we like and we don't pay any attention to what we don't like.

I have no idea what your asking. Are you saying that your b/f is indifferent to art, or something? Philistine is an insult to someone who is undereducated and unknowing of the higher arts like painting and writing.

Art - like beauty - is in the eye of the beholder. We all see something different when we look at a picture. I see nothing in Madonna, but appreciate Lowry, which is just matchstick men, basically.
It just means your boyfriend has different tastes to you. Does he think of you as a Philistine because you don't appreciate football?
Each to his/her own.

art is a purely personal thing and if his taste doesn't float ya boat well it's tough but it doesn't mean either of you are wrong!
