Quite possibly, you were jeered at because you were seen as an interloper. It's one thing to go to a Premiership match wearing the shirt of a different team to those involved, but to go wearing the shirt of a completely foreign country? Not a great idea, plus Man U fans probably don't like the U.S. much at the moment - after all, they're owned by people from the U.S. (sorry but I don't like using the word 'Americans').
Personally, I hate seeing people around wearing U.S. shirts as I constantly hope and pray that the U.S. keep their current low level of interest in my favourite sport, as once they get interested in it football will die. There will be even more obscenely high salaries, the game will probably be cut into quarters for more ad breaks, there will be all the pathetic shows that you get at U.S.-favoured sports, and probably television replays. So as long as the U.S. have a poor national team, I breathe more easily. Stick to your own sports - sports where the winners of the 'National' Football League can call themselves 'World Champions'.
By the way, there is nothing wrong with calling the sport 'soccer', as it comes from the old name for the sport: Association Football. There was a time when there was Rugby Football ('rugger') and Association Football ('soccer'), although football makes more sense (certainly makes more sense than calling a sport where 95% of the time the ball is being touched with hands 'football' - a sport which, by the way, was not invented by the U.S. at all, but rather by the Canadians, inspired by the English game of rugby).
Probably there is also something about English football fans being usually drunken hooligans. And, couldn't help saying this though others have too, WE butchered the AMERICAN language? Excuse me? Get a sense of history! Anyhow, at least we know how to spell ('yuo guys'?)

I don't think there is anything wrong with it as I do believe everything has it's time for example nowaday you can not compare England to any other contry out there (in terms of being more viewed around the planet) and the proof is that every businessman want to buy a club nowhere but in england while while 10 years ago we used to put our eyes in Holland, Italy, Germany and Spain.
If you go back you'll realise that a huge number of the greatest players of all time played there like; Pele, Becken, etc... this is a matter of time and when you look at how they perform in the american copa or the world cup you'd tell yourself they are not as bad as we think.
Thanx!

Firstly its football not SOCCER!! lol
Take no notice, half the fun of a game of football is the banter. TBH i think that if the USA promoted football as much as your other main college sports you would have the best team in the world.
As a Brighton fan i am used to my fair amount of stick, but the best way to counter act it is sing back. Football is there for everyone to have a laugh, true there are always a few who like to have a row at a game but leave there little minds to it and were all gravey!
Ps. Were not all mindless hooligans in England, look at the death toll at football matches in Italy and Turkey before the whole world brands England 'Hooligans'. True i get wound up/exited when we play but ive never taken it any further. Niether have 99% of "REAL" fans, just the chavs who thinks its cool.

We have nothing against your football. If you enjoy it, good for you. But you can't call something a world series when only you play it. It can only be called an American series. More importantly, what is this rubbish about butchering your language? Your language was given to you by the English settlers. You have removed the correct pronunciation, misspell it and have turned it into a crude dialect of the beautiful English grammatically correct language of the world. Your impertinence overwhelms me. You have more cheek than an elephants backside.

Take no notice of them,It's just that I think that as we invented the game we look on it as ours & we are the guardians of it.I reckon if I went to the states with an England baseball shirt on I'd get the odd derisory comment or if I went to Florida or Houston wearing a British space administration shirt I'd get laughed at.
Know it all - your on dodgy ground - bigging up the superpower thing - once us Brits were a superpower not any more & the russians & the romans & the greeks & the egyptians - but not any more - do you see a pattern emerging ? The clocks ticking !

Great to see Americans finally understanding the global reach of "football" .
Your first mistake was going to old trafford . Try a team like Liverpool (most successful team in Britain ) Liverpool is now a US owned club . Difference is , Liverpool will always be "united" .

I think it more has to do with US's league(MLS) is considered a very low level league and that we don't take the sport seriously like the rest of the planet or in this case England does and since US is a major force in world affairs, its kinda odd to them. BTW, when did you go to the Red Devils-Fulham match? Did you have a fun time other than the jeering?

There's always idiots at football wherever you watch the game whether it be in England, Italy, Spain etc just ignore them and carry on wearing your shirt with pride, I would.
To be honest its probably just that you (America) have the potential to become a football (sorry I can't call it soccer) superpower wheras we (England) are still harping on about the world cup win in 1966!
I'll ignore the butchering the American language bit as I'm sure you actually speak English ;-)
Wear your shirt with pride ignore the small minded!!!

No one apart from Americans play that "sport". Football (soccer) is played competitvely and watched fanatically in almost all other countries on the planet.
Doesn't that tell you something about the appeal of the two sports ?
Who is right or wrong ? USA, or REST OF THE WORLD.
