I had to jump my car yesterday and it wouldn't start. The lady helping me insisted that I connect the negative line to my battery too. I did even though I knew that I wasn't supposed to because the lady is also my boss and I didn't want to argue with her. It worked and my car started. Why shouldn't you connect the negative line to the dead battery?

because hydrogen gas builds up on the positive post, why pure oxygen builds up on the negative. Just a spark is all it need to plow the battery up in your face. If the impact of 40 pound of battery plates and high strength plastic don't peal your face like a baseball bat with knives--then there is the acid to burn and blind. Also never use the alternator housing for grounding---the high amp electrical charge trying to find a good path can damage it.

try showing your boss how smart you are---and maybe you will get a promotion or a raise.

The reason is, when you make that last connection, no matter where it is, you're going to get a spark. If that spark is next to the battery and it happens to be venting hydrogen gas, you get a little fire, and that's bad.

Since most cars have "negative ground" you can connect just about anywhere metal on the car instead of the battery post. So next time, connect the two positive cables, connect the first negative to the battery and then make the last connection on a metal part away from the battery.

When jump starting a car you connect both of the positive cables (red) to the positive terminals of the batteries. Then connect the negative cable to the live battery and then the other end of the negative to the dead battery or to a good ground on the engine. This is the prescribed way to attach the cables. Start the friends car up and let run for a few minutes. This allows the needed battery to get some charge in it and then crank the ailing car. If it doesn't start right away then give it some more time. Never but never cross cables when the friends car is running it could ruin the alternator.
Good Luck.

I'm really not sure what you are asking here. Obviously you have to have two connections or the jump won't work. They do suggest the negative terminal be connected last, and on a good ground bolt on the engine or frame rather than on the battery so that if it does happen to spark it won't ignite any gasses produced by your battery.

Clamp one cable to the positive (+) terminal of the dead battery. Don't let the positive cable touch anything metal other than the battery terminals.
Connect the other end of the positive cable to the positive terminal of the good battery.
Connect one end of the negative (-) cable to the negative terminal of the good battery.
Connect the other end of the negative cable to metal on the engine block on the car with the dead battery. Don't connect it to the dead battery, carburetor, fuel lines or moving parts.
Stand back and start the car with the good battery.
Start the stalled car.
Remove the cables in reverse order.

You usually want to avoid placing the Negative(-) cable directly on the dead battery to minimize the chance for explosions. You should only use the ground post on the dead battery as a last resort.. You attach the negative cable to the frame or the block.

If the battery is frozen, or it is cracked and liquid is leaking out, DO NOT boost your car! Bite the bullet and go buy another battery. If you try to jump start a frozen battery, or one with a crack in it, it will explode, and battery acid will dissolve your eyes.

The correct sequance for jumping a car is dead batteries positive, live batteries positive, live batteries negative, dead batteries engine block or frame rail, away from the battery. This is because the batter exhausts gasses are very explosive if a spark is present.

You can do that.... that's how I used to do it.... it doesn't even matter because the negative battery terminal runs straight to the ground chassis on your car. But the main reason is because the last connection made will spark, and your battery emits a flammable gas..... so the spark could blow up the battery.... a small chance on that, but it could happen.

Because there is a chance of spark, and sprak near a batter is not good with dangerous with very explosive hydrogen gas.People have been injured by connecting negative to negative on the battery post.Be my guest though.

Batteries generate hydrogen which is explosive. The chance of explosion is small, but to avoid taking this chance complete the circuit by connecting to a bolt on the engine or some other solid ground.
