There is plenty of oil in the steering filter and the noise sounds very loud when I turn the wheel. Sounds like gravel crounching.

Could be CV-joints are worn out, or other steering components (like power steering pump pr drive belt - if it has power steering)

WARNING (from website below): A CV joint failure can cause loss of steering control under certain circumstances. If the joint locks up, it can prevent the wheels from being turned.

The CV Joint assembly should be checked. The gravel-crunching sound is caused by a broken gear. You have to get your car checked by your local dealer or mechanic IMMEDIATELY as this is dangerous and might cause loss of steering control.
