I know the sound you speak of, but does this happen all the time or just once in a while??
Two things come to mind when I read your question; sleep apnea or you could be entering an out of body experience. Personally, I would go to a sleep specialist or to a regular doctor to rule out apnea or other sleep related diseases before looking into paranormal explanations which is doubtful in explaining your situation.

It's not a ghost just your mind playing tricks with you. You are thinking you are hearing a bang some where in your soul or where ever it may be but there is no bang at all.

I can't believe that someone else is experiencing this, too! I know this sound... I do the exact same thing.... and I don't know what causes it. Apparently it has nothing to do with weight, because I am about 10 lbs underweight! I am going to read all you answers to see if anyone else experiences this or knows what it is... At first it scared me to death... and it still does to a certain extent. But I know now that I'm not dying! Thanks for asking this very personal experience!!!!!

You could have sleep apnea, where you stop breathing in your sleep. You should probably get checked out, you could die if you don't wake up. Even slim people have it.

Could be your soul trying to escape. Could just be sleep paralysis and associated hypnagogic phenomena.
