He ended up embodying the civil rights movement, the only other person (IT had to be a black male leader.) that could have done it was Malcolm X and he was (and should have been rejected as a reverse racist.) MLK's not-violent position attracted many whites to the movement which generated the support of a majority (A vast minority at the very least.) of the nations people to the movement's side. It's not that MLK was in himself a pentacle of virtue, he was in fact an adulterous opportunist whose plagiarized his PhD thesis and use "religion" as a means of fulfilling his own ambitions. But his has come to be the image of a movement which has done more good than bad. (It has done bad as well.)

He was a man who stood up for his beliefs but yes you are right besides his eloquent speeches he was arrested and beaten for his beliefs and in the end he gave his life for the civil rights movement.
I remember at this time in history a lot of people did the same and he was one of many.
Sometimes we forget the little unsung heroes in any movement and just remember a few eloquent speech makers.
John F. Kennedy was of the same theme. He made a few eloquent speeches but what did he really do? same thing..i guess you have to do something drastic like get shot to bring attention to your cause.

Really, the things that made MLK unique were his vision and his leadership. He was able to envision a world quite different from the one he was living in, that's not something that easy. More importantly he was able to articulate his vision and share with with others, getting them to buy into the vision and strive to achieve it. He led people, they believed in him and they were willing to take great personal risks on his behalf.
That's what makes him such a unique person.

He traveled widely, wrote books, raised a family, had a PhD, and all the other stuff before he killed prior to the age of 40.

He fought for equal rights for blacks, jews, catholics, and other minorities, even despite the fact that he was a reverand.
