I notice some red marks on my gold fish recently. Both of them! They dont look sick but I'm concerned. The marks are mostly on their back. It's not like a dot. At first i thought it's just a darker orange color. But no it's red. Any idea what it is and if it is dangerous what are the remedies?? Any help is much appreciated.

If it looks like damage to the skin, it is most likely septicemia. It is redness on fish, bloodstreaks or patches on skin without apparent injury, especially in the fins and/or skin, small haemorrhages around eyes, loss of appetite, sluggish or very sluggish behavior. Septicemia can come as a result of another infection or illness (such as finrot) or it can result instead from dirty water (which, oddly sounding as it may be, can actually mean too clean of water too). When the bacteria enter the goldfish's circulatory system, they are able to travel throughout the fish's body very quickly, causing damage to body tissue, blood vessel, and the fish's heart. This often results in internal bleeding. Because these fluids may fill the fish's abdomen, dropsy may also result. This is a very serious condition and must be treated immediately. Septicemia is fatal unless treatment is administered immediately. If your other fish doesn't have it, place the afflicted fish into a quarantine tank because it is contagious. If they both have it, just medicate the tank they're in now. Administer Maracyn-2 according to directions. Next, you need to assess why your fish got septicemia. Most likely the water quality. Is the tank too small? You need a minimum of 10 gallons of water per fish. Are you doing proper 25% water changes once a week and siphoning the gravel? You shouldn't be cleaning your tank "squeaky-clean." Also, learn about the nitrogen cycle and testing your water so you will be able to tell when you have healthy water. Good luck to you and your fishies!

Some fish change colors depending on the season or their reproductive status. The color may change if the quality of their water changes as well. The most common fish disease is "ick", a white fungus. I would suspect that your goldfish are simply growing up and becoming adults!

Septicemia or costia maybe. Try treating with antibiotics, though if it is one of these it may be too late by the time it shows.
