the carwax technique always works, that's weird. did u wait 5 minutes to let it dry? maybe it's more than just a regular scratch. it might of gotten too deep. if not, make sure the lense inside the PS2 is clean. i know i had to open up my PS2 more than once to clean my lense because it always gets dirty.
PS: why is the Wii so weak?

try cleaning it with a lint free cloth and some wood furniture polish (like pledge). if that doesn't work you may have to buy a new one. I had the same problem (with my GTA game hehe) and the pledge thing worked for only one time and then it kept giving me that error message again. I ended up buying a new one but unfortunately for me that was before it became a greatest hit so I payed the full freakin price. I think you can get it now for like $20

Yeah, if you used toothpaste and Turtle Wax, im out of ideas. i saw a case with all 3 GTA games on sale cheap somewhere, so maybe you should just chuck your game and get a new one.

If the other suggestions fail. I have seen restoring solutions advertised. they are used to remove scratches from cd and dvd. I have not tried them, but they may be worth a shot.

Try window cleaner and a cotton cloth. dont use a tissue! if this does not work try bringing into EB Games or a store like that. They can usually clean them for free very well.
