I just a betta fish. Is there anything I should know about them?
Also, we have a plant on top, but it isn't quite big enough for the vase yet. Do you need a plant for the top of the vase?

Thanks in advance =D

you dont have to have the plant but it is good that you have it this will give the betta a more natural environment. they eat the roots off the bottom of the plants. also color enhancing betta food is the best i had a betta that lived on it for 2 years and thats a long timne for a fish. also the male betta has long pretty fins and the female has smaller fins more like a regular fish. dont ever put two male bettas together they will fight to the death. you may put a male and a female together though. keep the fish bowl clean at all times and everything should be fine.

Betta fish actually have a labyrinth lung. In simple terms, this means that they get oxygen from the water they are in AND from the air. They need to breathe air.

The plant on the top, usually a peace lilly, that has become so popular to display bettas with is actually a horrible idea. Especially, if it completely covers the surface area of the water. The betta cannot get to the top to breathe air. In my opinion, the plant is not needed. If you want to put a plant in, I would reccomend a java fern. They don't require much light and can grow on bassically anything. My bettas love to swim through theirs.

As for other info, do not put two male bettas OR a male and a female betta together. They will fight. Females are fine together as long as they are in a good sized tank.

Change you betta's water every week. If you have a cup to put him in, put him in the cup with some of his tank water while you change his water. Change out half of the tank water and replace it with de-cholrinated tap water or bottle SPRING water. Let it sit for 30-minutes to an hour and then put your betta back in. Do not top off your bettas tank i.e. pour water on the top to make the tank full. This does nothing more than let the toxins in the water build up over time.

To keep the tank cleaner, feed you betta three to four pellets every three days. Fish don't stave because they are cold-blooded. In the wild, some fish go several weeks without eating.

Most diseases that fish get are linked to poor water quality due to over-feeding and/or not changing the water. As long as you clean the water weekly and feed every three days, you should have no problem with your betta at all.

1)Don't have the plant at the top... that is a common misconception that they love it... they dont.
2) Do NOT scrub the bowl sweaky clean...they need that bacteria to be healthy...instead you need to dump the old water, dry it out with a paper towel then put fresh warm water in it.
3) Only feed them one a day and only what they can eat in about 5 minutes time.
4) If you start to see a white film they have ICH...get an ICH treatment ASAP and follow all directions.
5) Lots of movement can stress them out, so try to move them as little as possible.

GOOD LUCK!! Enjoy you new fish

OMG.. the most important thing... NEVER put to Beta fish together.. dont even let them see each other.. they will kill their selves trying to get to it... These are Chinese fighting fish, so DO NOT PUT THEM TOGETHER!!!!!!!!! and a plant does help with the filtration of the water...

BettaTalk is a decent site. I've had two. Killed them both. They can be sensitive little things.
