I just got a Russian tortoise this morning and it has been digging like crazy. Does anyone know why?

Russians are natural diggers. It's just something they like to do. Gives them exercise, a place to hide, cooler temps if it's too warm.

Even in an indoor set-up they should have several inches of substrate to dig in, or they'll start trying to dig through the walls! (I had one that tried to do this anyway!) http://www.austinsturtlepage.com/Care/cs-russian.htm

Russian tortoises like to dig and burrow.

Russians like burrows. This is good, normal behavior.

Glass walls, however, can cause some stress- it hits the wall, cannot pass, so starts to dig or try to climb. Try blocking off the lower few inches of glass.

nervous? Could be a gravid female looking for a place to leave her eggs. If thats the case, I would set up an incubator soon. You dont want to waste good CB Russian Tort eggs. You can use a chick incubator and take the turning racks out... If this is the case, email me or something...

Otherwise, its probly just nervous and wants to make itself a nest... Either way, good luck.

-edit: I noticed my female doing this today so I put a box with dirt in it in her cage and she went hog wild burrowing. Maybe you should do that too? I plan on getting a lot of dirt next time I'm at the store and putting a little tote of dirt in the cage so they can have a place to dig.
