The Last King of Scotland is an award-winning first novel by journalist Giles Foden. Focusing on the rise of Ugandan President Idi Amin and his reign as dictator from 1971 to 1979, the novel is a fictional memoir of a Scottish doctor in Amin's employ based on impressions of actual events.

So that's the answer. It's BASED on a true story. Which means there once was an African leader called Idi Amin, who once had a contact with a Scots doctor and so on. What's nice about it is that you can make your own mind up about whether the doctor was such an influence on the big man, who was clearly a nutter, or whether it wasn't that big a deal.
Ultimately, we'll never know. that's what's wonderful about the past.
Right here, right now. That's the only thing/place/time that matters.

Idi Amin certainly existed, but the character of Nicholas Garrigan is an amalgam of many different characters. So, it's part true, part Hollywood fiction. Well done to Forrest Whittaker by the way for getting the Oscar.
