I liked Roxy's suggestion. However, you do not say if you are planning on emphasizing email over postal mail or visa versa. Depending on how you are going to approach your topic, you might consider: "Although email is becoming more and more popular and provides the same ability to communicate as postal mail, I believe the differences are also significant enough to guarantee the survival of both methods." From there, you could go on to compare the differences in speed, but the ability of postal mail to provide more personal messages. You might then include any personal experiences with both postal and email. For example, I love the speed of email and the ability to send the same message simultaneously to several people. However, I also cherish some hand-written letters that I have saved--ones from my husband when he was assigned overseas and ones from my mother who is deceased. Just seeing Mom's handwriting brings back wonderful memories of a special lady.

I don't always believe you have to say what the comparison is in the opening sentence. But, you could start with "You've Got Mail!. How did it get here? Then go into Post or E and start your essay.

I personally like "There are similarities and differences between emails and postal mail."

Good luck!

Never start a topic sentence with "There are"...it's considered poor form....

"Why would anyone think snail mail and e-mail are similar? I maintain that they are different in nearly every important way: Speed of response, convenience, implied formality, cost ......"

You can take it from there.
