Get 3 Boxes and a garbage bag.

Box 1= Keep
Box 2= Storage
Box 3= Give away.

Garbage bags = Garbage (obviously)

Start on one side and work your way through it all....eventually you will have some sort of control over the mess and it wont be overwhelming once you get started and get in to the groove of things.

Before you know it you you will have plenty of room to actually "do something" in it and will feel like you have accomplished your goal.

Good luck and keep in mind that it didn't get like that over night so it wont be fixed over night either....but if you stick with it at least you will get it done. ^.^

Just a start: take a big garbage bag and walk around the room throwing out those things you reallly don't need. If they've lain on the floor for a couple months, or are under a pile of things you rarely touch, get rid of them. Fill that bag up and throw it in the trash can without thinking twice. You can do that in 15 minutes!

Next, get a nice sized box, set a timer for 15 minutes and fill that box with things you can take to Goodwill. Once the box is filled, put it in the trunk of the car or somewhere so you won't go back through it. You've made the decision to give it away...don't second guess.

Next, set a timer for 15 minutes and pick up dirty clothes; throw them on piles in the way you'd wash them, then put them in the laundry basket and get started on washing them.

That's enough for one day. At least at that point you will be able to see some progress and maybe the room won't feel as overwhelming. Don't put it off. Start tomorrow!!

Start in one place, a pile. Make yourself work at least 1/2 hour every day on that pile until it is all put away or thrown out. Pat yourself on the back, treat yourself to something nice, then, next day, start another. Before you know it, you will be done. Make yourself get rid of things you can't use or wear within the next 6 months. Then, once you have conquered the room, spend 10-15 minutes before bed time putting things away or deciding you don't need them, give away or trash. You will stay neat and tidy! Adopt this attitude any where you have an overwhelming mess. Set a goal and only work on it a little at a time, if you have the energy, spend extra time on it but don't make it a bothersome task or you will avoid doing it. Bite off a little at a time. This can work in the workplace as well! Good Luck and stick to it!

Get some boxes and sort the things as to where they would go.Throw dirty laundry into a pile in the hall until you're done and then ATTACK! Sort out misc crap that just needs to go into a junk box for the time being, put shoes in a box, clothes in a box, hair things, jewelry, makeup in another, books and magazines in another... once everything is sorted into a general area start with what would be hardest for you to put away. If the clothes hanging, folding, and putting away is the thing you hate the most then do that first. If you need to stop, then bring your dirty laundry to where it goes (not back on the floor) and stack your boxes neatly and go about your daily routine. The next day pick up where you left off, putting things where they belong. Once everything is put away, then do the things like making your bed nice, vacuuming, etc.

I use 3 bins or boxes or laundry baskets. Label one Throw Away, Label one Put Away, and lastly Give Away.Every day for 15 minutes put items in these bins. Empty the throw away items in the trash. Put the give away items in your trunk of your car, and put away the items in the put away bin. Just 15 minutes do the bin thing and after the 15 minutes, repeat going to the trash, putting up, and giving away. Then stop until the next day. If you haven't worn something in 6 months, consider giving it away. After 10 days, you will know what kind of organizational items you will need. Try not to buy any containers or dividers until you have cleared the room. You can do this. Don't skip a day. It's just 15-20 minutes a day. Good luck and have free flowing creative energy in your room.

Look up Flylady.net; she's a housecleaning guru who helps people get out of their messes. I am sure she has tips for kids and teenagers somewhere on her website.

The important thing is to realize, your room didn't turn into a hellhole in one day. Take it little by little, and it will get clean!

The second thing to realize is that you MUST keep on top of it. Starting now, don't just dump things anywhere -- put them away. It only takes a few seconds, and you'll be able to find stuff.

Until your room is pretty tidy, you should make a habit of dumping the trash can every day. Choose a time -- first thing in the morning, or last thing at night, or whenever works -- and empty it completely. If you don't have a place to throw away your trash, it just gets piled up someplace else.

Flylady really helped me; she also recommends a book called "Clear Your Clutter" by Karen Kingston. It talks about how clutter will mess up your feng shui (which is a little goofy, sometimes), BUT, it has very practical tips for how to get things cleaned up. I bought it and loved it.

Good luck -- and remember, there is no magic fairy who will take away your mess. You have to do it yourself -- but if you do it for 15 minutes each day, you will get it done!

The rule is...and it's a good one. If you haven't looked at it, thought about it, or used it more than once in two years, then get rid of it. Sort items by room, bath, kitchen, etc.
Being a pack-rat is a personal security issue. We like to surround ourselves with comfort items we convince ourselves we need, then we rarely use them. Curbing impulse buying will help save your sanity and your budget.
Whether you decide to donate the item to charity, sell it in a garage sale, or give it to friends and family...doesn't matter, get rid of the junk. You will like the change. Don't go out and buy new junk to replace the old. Learn to live with a few nice items that have meaning, not a pile of stuff you hardly ever use.

This is what I do to help my mom who is a packrat/bad housekeeper:
First things first, get a lawn trash bag and just go thru and throw away all the trash.
Make piles of stuff you know you NEVER use, and chunk it, or give it away to charity if its useable.
Make another pile of stuff you want to keep.
Put all your books and magazines in a pile.
All your clothes in a pile.
Then go through each pile, and further eliminate what you don't want out of them.
Seperate your clothes by color and start a load in the wash...and keep at it all day until its done, if thats feasible.
This should make a dent in your mess, if you stay at it and work on it.
Once you get it cleaned, keep it that way, by throwing away your trash, get a clothes hamper and use it, and put stuff up after you use it.
Good luck!

You have to start with who made the mess make your mind over to do better and then really organize. Yard sale what is good throw out what you have not used in a long time or what is broken or useless, buy plastic containers to hold what you want to keep, label them, and slide them under the bed for more space Good luck to you, my rule, there is a place for every thing and every thing should be in place it doesn't take any more energy to put it in place than it does to throw it on the floor and have to pick it up later

Start with one item like clothes. Hang them up, pack away give away just get them done. Then pick another item like paper and magazines. Then books go thru them save what you want give the rest to your library. Then go on to another item until everything is sorted. Then dust, vacuum, wash your sheets and remake your bed. That should get you started. I'm having to do the same thing myself now. Good luck
