Remember one simple rule of thumb. Whatever you add to your tank, stays in your tank! The only thing that evaporates easily is water but the trace elements and chemicals are left behind. Even with a 50% water change the amount of chemical being used here is excessive.

Keep life simple for yourself and your fish, simply continue the aquasafe at 1/8 tsp for each 2 1/2 gallons of new water added to the tank and in bewteen water changes just make sure to change out your filters proporly and if it gets to be a little murky a gravel vacuum never hurts. They should be very inexpensive for a tank this size and im sure with the money savings in chemicals you can easily afford one now! The main thing we are trying to create with any tank is a replica of the fish's natural enviornment and the only reason we add chemical is to add an effect that nature automaticly does that we cant re create in our homes. Also just be careful to watch your feedings, i only say this because it sounds like with this many chemicals being added during water changes it seems you may have a problem your trying to get rid of such as murky water or alge. Fish should only be fed what they can consume within 3mins.

If you want to know the real effect of what these chemicals are doing to your water you can bring a small water sample to almost any fish retailer (Petco for sure) and they will do a water test for you though its not really needed.

The Easy Balance claims that it reduces water changes to only twice a year. I've never used this, but as the saying goes, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Besides, if you are doing water changes and doing them properly and keeping your water quality in the correct parameters, this product should be completely unnecessary. NovAqua does not remove chloramines. The AmQuel removes the same things and provides the same benefits that the NovAqua does but also removes chloramines. Tetra Aqua Safe is basically the same thing as AmQuel; however, some reviews say it is a better product. With proper water changes and cleanings, the AmQuel/Aqua Safe alone should be sufficient.

Wow, you only need 1 teaspoon of Novaqua per 10 gallons. What is easy ballance? Salt? if not you don't need it if you are using NovAqua +. That is what I use as well. That is all you need. Since your tank is only 5.5 gal. you only need a half a teaspoon for the whole tank. When doing a water change I wouldn't add more than 1/8 of a teaspoon.

The nice thing about NovAqua+ is it doesn't matter if you use too much. But you are using way too much.

You do not want to use those in your fish tank. NovAqua is all you need for your tank. It supplies everything the tank needs to start and stay healthy. More is just more not better.

There are many claims to different chemicals out there but the truth is why are you over medicating over chemicalizing your tank?
Ditch the AmQuel and EasyBalance you don't need them.

You need to remove the chlorine and chloriamines but I suggest only one chemical for that. You may consider a stress coat or something but limit it's use to water changes and new fish. Neons like frequent partial water changes say 1 gallon for a 5 gallon tank.

All you should ever add to your tank is a water conditioner, like Tetra Aquasafe or Seachem Prime. Too many chemicals can definitely be detrimental to your tank.

Your tank is also slightly overstocked. Neons don't produce a lot of waste, but I would still recommend 50% water changes twice weekly since it is such a small tank.

Well, with so few fish you should only be putting some sort of chlorine-neutralizer in it. Aqua-Safe works well, so you should try that.

I think you are over-chemicalizing your tank. Cut back a bit. Even the worst city water shouldn't need that much! >.<

Try just using Aqua-Safe, as it not only takes the chlorine out but gives fish the slime layer they ned to live.

Good luck

All you need to get is one tap water conditioner, in a large bottle, and dose accordingly. It's like only wanting a small sip of water and buying a gallon jug of water... You don't need all that much stuff to put in there.
