it was a group of literary characters against a freemason villain. the heroes were allen quartermaine, captain nemo, dr. jekyll (and mr. hyde) and two i cannot recall-one portraying a female character from bram stoker's dracula and the other replacing the invisible man. the villains were dorian gray and dr. moriarty (of sherlock holmes mysteries). the movie defined the phrase "both sucked and blew"-it was really really bad. most of the characters came from novels that were symbolic in nature-for example, the invisible man and jekyll and hyde represented certain fallacies in men-so them running around as superheroes came off as silly. dorian grey looking like prince was ridiculous. if you want to see better portrayals of these characters, look up the old movies they appeared on-the portrait of dorian gray, dracula or nosferatu, dr, jekyll and mr. hyde, the invisible man, any old basil rathbone sherlock holmes, the disney version of 20,000 leagues beneath the sea...
