"They" say "one picture is worth a thousand words" so I'd have to go with the pictures -- although photos can be as manipulated as print can be prejudiced.
I have a good collection of (mostly children's) books sought out and saved specifically for their magnificent illustrations. (Mind you, it does help to know the story first!)
