To me the saddest song in the world is actually a medley of two songs, recorded years ago by folk singer Tom Rush. The medley is 'No Regrets/Rockport Sunday'.

In the first part, the lyrics begin,
"I know your leavin's too long overdue
For far too long I've had nothing new to show to you..."

In Rush's deep, sorrowful voice the song speaks of the painful period just after two people end their relationship.

The second song is an instrumental, just Rush playing this slow, lonely tune on his guitar. Whenever I hear it I can't help but think of standing by oneself on a craggy hill overlooking the cold, colorless ocean on a windy, overcast day.

It's as if he walked out of the first song to separate himself from everything and everyone else in order to feel the full effect of his feelings of isolation. There is some hope in the melody, which I find is important for a song full of pain, because it somehow only makes the sadness worse.

I just recently was able to find the versions of these songs that I prefer, from the original (vinyl) album. They were on Yahoo! Music, listed as two separate songs. 'No Regrets' from the album Forever Changing, The Golden Age of Elektra Records, 1963-1973. 'Rockport Sunday' from The Circle Game.

Some magazine in Britain did a poll or whatever and figured out that by public opinion the saddest song was "the drugs don't work" by the verve.
