42, 3+4=7 - 1 = 6 3 + 5= 8-1= 7 7X6=42

Since John is in the 3rd row from the front, and 4th row from the back, then there are 6 rows in all. (You have to subtract the one John is in.) He is 3rd from the left and 5th from the right, so there are 7 seats in that column. Multiply 6*7=42. There's your answer.
