Macbeth pretty much single-handedly saved Duncan (and Scotland) from the rebels at the beginning of the play. Duncan's visit to Macbeth's castle is a tribute to Macbeth's great prowess on the battlefield, and a sign of the high esteem in which Duncan holds him.
