Males are generaly larger and have longer and more pinted fins than the female. This can be helpfull if you have a pair. If not the males generaly have very little blue if any on their gills and the little they do have will be in spots. Females have large areas of splattered blue on their gill cover and they are more slender. Their body also lacks the coloration of a male. Also depending on the age Males tend to grow up to about 10 inches where females only grow to about 6 or 8.

Just a side note. If your a fan of the Jack Dempsey you may also want to check into a "Green Terror" cichlid. They resemble slightly a Dempsey but have awesome orange hilights on their fins (males). Hope this helps!

Males have a light grey base color, plenty of blue and green spangles covering the entire body, and a dramatic red edging to the dorsal and anal fins. Females show the same general coloration, with fewer spangles. Also their sex organs are different as you would expect.

Males are generally darker in color and have more and brighter spots as well as more pointed anal and dorsal fins
