would depend on when they were written and what was considered "acceptable" language at the time.

the problem is history books are not updated regularly. Since I went to school, the heads/bodies of dinosaurs have changed many times making them look totally different than when I learned about them. A planet has been down graded to an astroid and many "historical" facts (so called) on many of our former leaders have changed considerably.

History is merely one version of the events that everyone can agree upon

I agree with the answer above in that "history" changes and the language used to explain will too. The language level would depend on the age level aimed at for example year 7 (British system) would mean the books would have a reading age of less than 12 as this is the age of a year 7 student. If you want it in terms of vocabulary then a range of around 5,000 words would be used
