Im not sure how to approach it. What do I buy for him and how do I ask? Is it even appropiate for me to ask? We have a good relationship, he has just been burned in the past by ex's. Please help. Thanks

9 years? No. Don't ask him. A woman should never ask a man to marry him. It looks desperate.
If you want him to marry you, be hard to get. Start having a life. Even look at apartments for rent. He has you on the hook and he knows it. Rattle the cage a little.
But DON'T ask him.

Wow nine years is a loooooooong time to be with someone and still not be married... Hell most people who do get married don't stay together that long and you've already made it nine years, congrats!
Really though you should know him well enough by this time that you can decide all by yourself how to approach him about marriage. I just can't believe one of you hasn't already broached the subject, wow.

Ask him to marry you of course,buy a mens engagement ring,no its not inappropriate if its what you wanna do don't let anyones opinion stop you,good luck.

you don't have to buy him anything. you say honey we have a child together, we should get married.
