Portuguese brought guns and God in 1543. Japan wanted the former but the leaders disdained the latter and later prohibited it under penalty of death.
Guns were first used in battle in 1548. Oda Nobunaga really demonstrated the effectiveness of the gun at the battle of Nagashino when he annihilated the renowned Takeda cavalry by firing in controlled volleys from behind defensive positions.
After Sekigahara, the Tokugawa shogunate strictly controlled the manufacturing of guns so that they could not be used to arm rebellions.

Around 1542, the Portuguese (who also gave tempura to Japan and the ukulele to Hawaii).
By 1600, The Battle of Sekigahara, Japan had 300,000 guns, more than any other nation, and those guns were of superior make to what existed in Europe. Several Japanese lords had more guns than the British army.
