Between now and end of March. Go to your local Garden Centre or B&Q, there is a product called Rapid Lawn, a bit dear, but then it has all the info you need to do it properly and is garunteed to grow!

my advice would be to find some grass seed in your local garden centre that is specific to shaded areas. You may also need to check that the soil is not too acidic, as conifers over time change the composition of the soil. If your in the UK then the best time that i would recommend that you sow the seeds would be late april early may. I would not advise laying new turf as you will only encounter the same problems.

good luck

I've tried it in spring and fall and I've hade much, much, much better results laying new seed in fall. This is because as the temperature gets cooler the soil holds more moisture and crabgrass(and other weeds) can't grow as well. It is very possible to excellently carry out a seeding job during spring but you'll be happier with the results in fall!

It may not be a matter of timing. Some grass varieties are more shade tolerant. If this area is heavily shaded you may want to try a different type of grass. Your local garden center should be able to advise you as to a more shade tolerant type of grass.

This spring, while it's still cold, sow some seeds. I finally broke down after years of buying cheap, bulk seed (which is o.k. for sunny spots) and bought Scott's or some other expensive brand for my shady spots. Well it worked really well, so I'll be doing the rest of my shady spots that same way this spring. My point is buy the cheaper stuff for the majority of your lawn, but for the shady spots, splurge!
