My Nephew will be station there soon (Marines) and me and his dad are thinking of visiting Okinawa.

What are the best recommended places to visit? How is the night life? Is it expensive to stay, eat and shop?

How long is the flight for there to main land Japan if we want to visit?

The first thing that comes to mind is to tell you that, if anyone asks, you have no affiliation with the US military. Okinawans, for various reasons, are none too fond of the military presence.

I'm not very well-versed in the touristy parts of Okinawa, but this site may be able to help you. The information you want is below the 'World Heritage Sites' banner.

well, every single okinawa citizens hate americans, from WWII and bullets flying over their heads occasionally (modern day) and helicopters crashing, jet planes constantly flying (day or night)

well there are many clubs by the base, but if you go to japanese clubs... well stay around the base.

shuri shrines is the greatest place to visit in okinawa. it is expensive to stay, but okinawa is usually the cheap to stay kinda place in japan, so its ok.

flight to Honshuu( main land you say) is about 10~11 hrs of flight.

good luck, and not to confuse you, they are very peaceful people and will not attack you randomly, evey if you attack them mostlikely they will not attack you back, so feel free, but they will hate you. HATE.
