Is there a vaccination for rats for rabies. And if so, can you give it to the rat before you can keep them as a pet?

Rats make wonderful pets!! They are clean, intelligent and relatively low maintenance.

There is no rabies vaccination available for rats. The only approved rabies vaccines are for cats, dogs and ferrets. Rats rarely contract the deadly virus.

Also, pet stores do not vaccinate small animals against rabies either.

tons of people have rats as pets. I have 3 right now, and I've had them for pets as years. Theyre sweet, smart, clean, and very social. (some people who've never had them as pets will tell you that theyre gross and full of rabies...dont listen to these people, they dont know what theyre talking about). I suggest doing some research on them before you run out and buy one, so that you know what youre getting into, but they make great pets. Just dont try to catch one and turn it into a pet. Pet stores sell rats as pets all the time, and Ive never had to get a vaccination for them, because theyre not wild rats.

Please, if youre considering getting a pet rat, do your research online, so you know what kind of cage to get,(a wire one, suitable for rats is best, because rats enjoy climbing), what kind of food to feed your pet, how to train it, etc. Its not fair for you or the rat to just go buy one without knowing anything about them.

if you buy the rat from the store then the pet is good to go as long as you take care of it. If you just find a rat and decide to keep it as a pet then for sure take it to a vet to get it checked out and see if it is even safe to be around. But if you buy it from a pet store everything will be good as is.

yes you can keep one as a pet. There is no need for a rabies vaccination as your rat, I would assume, will be kept in a cage in your house.

I have bred and raised hamsters and rats for over 10 years and not once had to worry about rabies...if they are in a cage then it is less chance of them getting rabies...from what i can see...

rats are fun to have as pets...they like to hide in your hair...and they like going on bike rides...and walks....

rats make great pets they are very intelligent and social and love to be with you. but seriously whats the chances of a rat contracting rabies in your home? you dont need to get him/hre vaccinated for rabies, rats are very clean animals and when in captivity carry very little to no disease whatsoever.its the nasty dirty wild city rats going through everyones garbage that are filthy and diseased. You will notice a rat spends most of its time cleaning itself.

i wouldn't advise keeping a wild rat as a pet. rabies isn't the only disease you have to worry about there. they do sell great pet rats at most pet stores. they're smart rodents.

We just got 2 rats the other night at our local pet store and they are wonderful. We named them Salem (the old town name where I live) and Sabrina (it went well with Salem). We have them in 2 cages.
