What if we evolved from small mammals which had to react instantaneously to the threat of the Masters of the Planet (the lizards) or be eaten? What if some of the residual of those reactions lingered in our hard-wiring. Would that be enough to reinforce any fears we have of lizards a million years later? Would we, having intelligence, focus these fears and create a mythical being: much larger than us and with venom? Hmm. Are the myths of giants sublimated memories of our parents when we were infants? This is what is called psycho-babble. I think the answer is "could be". But flying lizards? (Aside from the fossils we have of them). Not contemporaneous with Modern Homo Sapiens. There are real limits to the size of a animal with the ability to fly.
Huge? yes - Venomous? yes - Flying? yes - Scales? yes - all in one? no.
Fire Breathing? You ever see the Circus performers spit fire? Evolution would suggest to me hat the little advantage gained (IF ANY) by spitting fire would be negated by the huge cost. (YOU try breathing superheated air and see how long you last!) Put down the advantages and disadvantages for fire breathing. Don't forget that all animals get sick. And a sick firebreathing creature would be a dead fire breathing creature, sometimes. The advantage would be what? frighten pray? job security for Smoky the Bear? The fire wouldn't be fatal to any but the smallest of creatures (like the fire ball from the Circus performers). I can't prove a negative, but I just don't think it is likely. Maybe in a couple of years we'll create one! Then we can claim the myths are based on prescience.

yes they did and still do!!! I think alot of the dinosaur bones found are dragon bones!!! But there were all different kinds...ones with wings, ones that could only walk and then the ones called worms..which were long and thin with little legs...lol..they normally lived down well..and were actually eels that got trapped and grew very large from all the eating it did and not much room to move...when they got so big they would come out and people would think they were dragons...

I didn't see the show. I always believed that once upon a time, ancient peoples stumbled across dinosaur bones or footprints. In order to explain this phenomenon, they romanticized the beasties. This is where we got the dragon concept.
