Gerund = an "-ing" verb used as subject of a sentence (i.e. Running is a good exercise.)

Appositive = a group of words that tells you something about a noun. It is separated from the rest of the sentence by commas (i.e. John, the younger of my two brothers, owns a mall. The appositive being "the younger of my two brothers")

Prepositional Phrase = preposition + noun, pronoun, etc. (i.e. into the woods, for Jane, by the Mayor's request)

Clause = subject + verb (+any other words that lengthens the clause)

Independent Clause = Main Clause (not really insubordinate; you use that word against employees and inferiors) = Simple Sentence = subject + verb (i.e. Birds fly.)

Dependent Clause = Subordinate Clause = subordinators (although, if, because, while, since, and others) + subject + verb (i.e. while you were sleeping, as long as he needs me, until the last teardrop falls)

Here I'll start you off...

Apposition is a grammatical construction in which two elements, normally noun phrases, are placed side by side, with the second element serving to define or modify the first. When this device is used, the two elements are said to be in apposition.
