I guess it's to be cynical and viewing everything with a potential for a failure or a negative outcome.
Example: If you've been badly hurt in a relationship, in your next relationship you'll be on guard, looking out for the signs that you've missed in your previous one and thus missing on the good that's possibly right in front of you.
Many people get disillusioned and bitter in regards to the things connected to government and politics, they have a feeling like their life is not their own, but they're just puppets of the politicians who use them for their own gain.
There are many examples, but really, if one doesn't sort that sort of thing out in one's own head, it's a bit of a waste of a life, isn't it?

One might say that i'm bitter towards life, so I guess I'm a fair candidate to answer this question. Being bitter towards life is somewhere between absolute depression and delirious cynicism, the point where you've come to expect disappointment, and anything less than what your "usual" standards would be is commonplace. The mind doesn't focus on anything more than a day or so in advance, so as not to build up expectations and then be torn down when the results fall inevitably short. Examples are everywhere; being bitter is an attitude, not an occurrence. If one is bitter about life, and something the least bit above their lowered, depressing expectations happens, they will either be elated or simply shrug it off (one cannot rejoice over a small occurrence).

I hope this helps.

I think being bitter towards life is sometimes a part of growing up and getting older. My mom always said, "When you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot in it and hang on. This was kinda hard to figure out until I came across the following.

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible, without surrender,
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even to the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons;
they are vexatious to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain or bitter,
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs,
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals,
and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love,
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment,
it is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.
YOU ARE A CHILD OF THE UNIVERSE, NO LESS THAN THE TREES AND THE STARS; YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO BE HERE.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life,
keep peace in your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

I remember my mom telling me and my brothers and sisters as kids,"If you want to make the Lord laugh,tell him what YOU have planned for your life. His plan might just be a little different". So ,after everything in your life wether good or bad,don't start with "Would'a,Should'a,Could'a".
