My daughters had a basketball tourney today and there were 4 teams in it. My daughters team won first place and then there was a second place, third place and fourth place winner. So yes, I would say there is such a thing as second place. In my book though today, all the teams were winners because of how hard they practiced and played in the game. It was very respectful.

It depends on how badly you want first place. If you want it really bad, then second place truely IS the first loser.

At least you usually get something for it. The real looser is in 4th place. This place is usually not even acknowledged much less given a medal or plaque or parting gift, etc.
