Does it mean he's hungry? He does it all the time even straight after he's been fed!

He's breastfed but we've been worried that perhaps he's not getting enough milk as I've not been too well lately and lost a lot of weight so we're not sure if the quality of my milk has suffered. Our Health Visitor is monitoring his weight weekly to make sure he is gaining enough - I've been told I'll have to put him on formula if he stars losing weight.

He doesn't use a dummy (pacifier) - like a lot of breast fed babies he just spits them out in disgust!

This is supposed to be a sign of a baby being hungry and also as you said you have been poorly yourself and so this could be causing the lack of goodness in your milk. Why don't you breastfeed and bottle feed. This means that you aren't losing the bond you get from breast feeding but you are alos making sure that your son is getting the nutrition he needs.
My cousin did this with her baby and it worked really well.

he could just have discovered his hands or he may need a dummy but try not to rush into the dummy thing(sorry pacifier) thats a hard thing to loose try breast milk and just before the last feed at bed time a small bottle of formula.

hi! my baby son is 12 weeks too! he sucks his fist aswell but i have introduced a dummy- he seems to want to suck all the time! it helps him now but i didn't want to give a dummy while breastfeeding as its a different kind of suction for him & it will interfere with breastfeeding. they r not recommended for breastfed babies! i only breastfed for 2 months had to stop cos he wasn't getting enough milk but he's a big baby 14lbs 10oz so was looking for larger feeds! my wee boy is teething too, maybe urs is& he's just looking for something to bite on?! goodluck!x

most babies do that, u could try feeding from both breasts (one after the other) at each meal time, but if he is putting on weight and seems happy in himself don't worry about it. It could also be early signs of teething?

It may just be a comfort thing he,or it may be time to up his bottle an ounce or two. Does he seem completely satisfied after the bottle or does he seem still a little fussy or discontent if so that may be the case or it could just be he likes his hand a lot =)

Its soothing him, do you give him a pacifier? If not, I suggest you do, he is enjoying the soothing and will continue to suck his fist, and soon his thumb. Remember you can toss out a pacifier, you can't toss out a fist or thumb.

It maybe that he is trying to self soothe himself and is searching for his thumb. You can help him by putting his thumb in his mouth for him or by giving him a pacifier.
