y=3x-2
For x = -2; y = -8 => (x, y) = (-2, -8)
For x = -1; y = -5 => (x, y) = (-1, -5)
For x = 0; y = -2 => (x, y) = (0, -2)
For x = 1; y = 1 => (x, y) = (1, 1)
For x = 2; y = 4 => (x, y) = (2, 4)

For any given value of x, y will always be 3x -2,
therefore y = 3x - 2. However if x is given a real value such as x = 5, then substitute 5 in place of x and evaluate the equation.
Eg. y = 3x - 2,
= 3 (5) - 2
= 15 - 2
= 13 (This is just an example if x = 5)

You must have been given a value to put as X. So if X=4 put the 4 in place of X. But 3X means X multiplied by 3, so the new value is 4 multiplied by 3 which = 12 and it is minus two so the answer is Y = 10.

Decide on what x is, then multiply this by 3 and take away 2 to find what y is equal to
so if x is 1, y is 1
if x is 2, y is 4
if x is 3, y is 7
Note, each time you add 1 to x you see y increases by 3

f(x)=3x-2
what is x?
substitue in the value for x, and you will get y (or f(x), they're the same thing.)
say x is 1.
f(1)=3(1)-2
f(1)=3-2
f(1)=1, or y=1
