The Japanese were warned. The government obviously did not heed the warning.
The first bomb, on Hiroshima, leveled the entire city. The estimated number of dead who died in the blast was over 260,000.
The Japanese were given time to surrender. They did not. A second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. Then the Japanese surrendered, unconditionally.
By this time, the bombing of Tokyo had cause fire storms that burned virtually everything to the ground.
It took the loss of three major cities and more than 600,000 dead to persuade the enemy to surrender.

They weren't used in WWII, or, rather, at all until Hiroshima. They are adored by genocidal maniacs and sadistic pigs like regerugged above.
