Well, first off, I don't...in however long "Idol" has been on, I think I've watched a total of 20-30 minutes...nothing wrong with the show, I just don't get into it.
That being said, I think the biggest attraction to program is that anyone who is watching can (and probably has) picture themselves up on that stage, belting out a song for Simon, Paula and Randy (I think the other guy is Randy, isn't he?). Viewers can't do that with other shows...Survivor? "I could never do that."
Fear Factor? "I would NEVER eat that stuff!" Jeopardy? "Ken Jenning would probably wipe the studio floor with me." But "American Idol," not only can a viewer imagine themselves on the show, they can convince themselves that they could be the singer to make the panel say "THIS is the performance that we've been waiting to hear all these years."...and maybe even get a compliment from Simon...even if they can't carry a tune if it had a handle, they can still imagine it.
And that is why "American Idol" is so popular...it's my theory, and I'm sticking to it.

I agree! (And as I'm typing this, I can hear the television. It's an American Idol commercial.) Why put someone on a pedastal and pay them billions of $ just because they can sing? I can think of hundreds of other ways to spend America's money!!!!

because it's very dramatic to watch someone go from nobody to somebody. It's a dream that most of us wish we could fullfill

"we" don't
I haven't watched it, but my sense is that it's just another distraction people go to, to escape their lives, instead of finding and risking a juicier way of living.
That's pretty true for most television programs in general, don't ya think...
