On the UK YA site I frequently see the "THINK" logo/advert/warning for keeping car speed down - safe driving. It is an effective logo.

I get flashes of that advert now and then, but for the moment I can't find it no matter how hard I try. Is that a subliminal advert or is it something else ?

No, technically it isn't. Here's a really good site about subliminal ads with examples: http://www.poleshift.org/sublim/

Subliminal advertising is concealed appeal to consumers’ unconscious awareness to buy product. These messages are indiscernible to the conscious mind, but are alleged to be perceptible to the subconscious or deeper mind: for example, an image transmitted so briefly that it is only perceived subconsciously, but not otherwise noticed.

Hope this helps you. :)

I'm reading advertising at University and in second year, I did an essay on the existence of subliminal advertising. Can't remember that much, but here's a bit...

Officially, subliminal advertising is illegal, at least in the UK. The first recorded case of subliminal advertising, I think, was the infamous 'coke' and 'popcorn' adverts in cinemas / movie theatres earlier in the 1900s by a bloke called Vicary.

Subliminal messages are images / sounds etc which are (alleged) to be perceptible to the subconscious, but not conscious mind.

My essay, which is now a few years old, examined these topics in depth...alot better than what I'm doing now! It has a pretty cool title too (there are two subliminal messages in the title):

A good example of subliminal advertising would be to relate two completely unrelated topics. Such as most beer commercials have beautiful girls, and everybody is happy so that when you go and see that beer you think happiness. When in reality go to any bar and how many people are smiling? Not many, and those that are most likely are faking it.

I wouldn't necessarily consider it subliminal advertising because the word "think" and everything about it is very obvious. There is nothing about it that speaks directly to your subconscious, or natural human instincts...

subliminal advertising is when a message, whether text, phographic or sound is embedded in something that you see or hear without you being able to consciously be aware that it is there.
