1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee F/T 4WD, 6 Cyl., automatic. I noticed the other day that the rubber boot on my left front CV was torn away exposing the CV joint. Today I noticed a clunking noise coming from that wheel which increases in the number of clunks the sharper the turn is. Is it possible that the CV joint is on the way out? I had the left front wheel bearing replaced about 18 months ago. There is otherwise no other noises or problems when driving straight and I was not aware of the noise when turning to the right. Any ideas are most welcome! Thanks in advance.

The cv joint is worn. Compare prices between just the joint or the whole shaft. Most of the time the whole shaft(inner and outer joints) is only a few dollars more than the individual joint and is much easier to install.

Yes, your CV joint is about ready to go out on you. If you would have caught the damage to the boot sooner it could have been replaced and relubed and it would have been fine, but since the boot was obviously torn for a while without you noticing the grease has been thrown out of the boot. So your looking at needing to replace that half-shaft. Get the half shaft replaced ASAP to keep from further damage to the front end of the vehicle and before that joint goes out completely and breaks.

i own a repair shop, and once the joint has been exposed to the air and dirt that gets in it it will make it go out,all the road dust and grime has gotten in to it,and you,ll have to replace it,its better and cheaper to replace the whole axle ,than it is to try and do just one ,i know this from a lot of experience with them,i also own one of them too,but just order a new axle for it,and be done with it,you,ll be glad you did,but that one is about shot, when they open up like that you can save them if you catch it when it first happens, you,ll have to replace that one, good luck,i hope this help,s.
