Like the whole book like Harry Potter books?

Most books are covered by copyright law, so it's illegal to make them available for free download. Some authors do allow this, but J.K. Rowling isn't one of them. But you can read books that the authors allow to be read for free as well as books that are in the public domain. Here are some sites that might interest you:

For books that aren't in the public domain, you can sometimes get an "ebook" from your local public library card. Basically, the library buys access to the book, and you check out that access with your card. I don't know if there is an ebook for Harry Potter, but they are becoming more popular.

If it's something recent, then probably not. Copyright law prevents websites from hosting entire books.

However... there's a lot of literature at www.bartleby.com. Pretty much all the "classics" are on there.
