No they are not the same although they are both made in a lab. A lab grown stone has all the same chemical and physical attributes as its natural counterpart. However a simulant is a crystal grown in a lab that not chemically and physically the same as the natural stone but it is just made to look like it (e.g. CZ for diamond)

If the chemical formula is the same the lab grown gemstone is better, because it is in a controlled environment, and there are no impurities.

However, "better" is all in the way you look at it. I think a natural specimen, even if there are impurities or imperfections, is better, just because it is natural.
