It is an asteroid.

There is a NASA site
http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/orbits/
where you can search for info on any asteroid
Type in Cottrell, click on Search and you get:
http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/db_shm?sstr=cottrell&group=all&search=Search
with a nice diagram of the orbit
(it is presently in our western sky, near Venus).

You can "Generate High-Accuracy Ephemeris" for this object (on the page showing the orbit diagram).

Then there is a site called YourSky. It is a bit involved in order to use it, but it is certainly worth the extra effort.

start at:
http://www.fourmilab.ch/yoursky/
Go down to The Virtual Telescope.
Go to the Aim Point box. Use: "Find object in catalogue"

From there, you can find stars, planets, periodic comets and asteroids.
Under asteroids, pick "by name", next page: click on C,
then scroll down the list for Cottrell.

On the map, it will show as the letter A in a circle. Next to it is another symbol: a circle with a cross attached to the bottom: the planet Venus.
You will see that it is in the constellation Pisces (the fish).

If you found it interesting, there is a TON of stuff out there you will also find interesting to read up on .
Check out Astronomy magazine or their website at astronomy.com.
Or check out nasa.gov for information on current and planned space missions.
