I noticed that whenever I turn on my pc, it takes awhile for the monitor to switch on. Sometimes, moving the mouse would work. But lately, when I am in the middle of working, the monitor would just turn all black with that straight ray of light in the middle of the screen. What could be troubling my pc?

check the connection, could it be loose? if it is, tighten it up with 2 side screws.

try to update your video driver, that could be the case, run Windows Update to have it scans, and download any video update you see, if not, you can do it manually, by right click My computer, select Properties, click Hardware, click Device Manager, click the + next do Display, rigght click the name that just appear right before the Display, select update Driver.

Your monitor is going bad. Heat build up is causing something to short. Time to get a LCD. $200-300 could get you a nice one from Costco.
