No, why should we limit our children to what language they choose to speak. I think it's a great idea to start introducing foreign languages to young children, but why only Spanish. I live close the Canadian border...so why not French.

No, just because there are many immigrants coming in who speak this language does not mean we should make this language mandatory.

NO..

The United States is held together by two things, a common basis of Law (the Constitution of the USA) and a common language. If you want a close example of how a language can divide a nation, you need look no further than Canada.

Canada has had at least two, possibly more votes on Quebec leaving the nation. Even when the votes were to stay in the nation, they still have the problem that every single document has to be in two languages to be legal. Imagine that in the USA.

The only reason the issue of Spanish is so hot is of all the immigrant groups that came to the USA, only the Spanish seem to feel they do not have to learn English but instead we have to learn their language. I think this is in large part due to the illegality of their arrival. If they do not obey the law in regards to getting here, why should we think they will obey any other law we have on the books? Why would we think they would learn our language?

I don't know that is should be made a 2nd language. However, I think that every student in public schools should be required to have proficiency in some foreign language. Having more knowledge, especially knowledge that helps you communicate more effectively is a wonderful thing. People from other places speak other languages, and that is ok. I work in health care and knowing a little French and Spanish has come in very handy. People get all bent out of shape when we talk about teaching our kids another language, but in reality there is nothing wrong with a kid's horizon being expanded a little.

Eubonics is recognized as a separate language such that often in such areas where Eubonics is the primary language teachers are required to teach in that language. I do not think Eubonics which is probably spoken more than Spanish in the US should become a required language because it will add to the expense of education which is all ready suffering. In areas where another language is very prevalent there are ESOL classes available to both the children and adults in most school setting for free all year round. It would add more to legal costs, educational costs, etc. It is a different thing if a business recognizes the economic gains of supporting such languages because it is supported by people purchasing such products and not funded by the tax dollar.

First of all, there's no official language in USA. One is free to use any language he/she wishes. But we can all agree that you can't get too far if you don't know English in USA.

If Spanish is made a 2nd language, then English is assumed to be 1st. You'll be seeing a lot of debates and competitions for 3rd, 4th, 5th... Opening a can of worms. So I'd say no for avoiding choas.

I think people should have freedom to learn any language they want. So kids should not be "made" to learn it. More language classes should be offered to interest them.

I don't see why it should be made a second language.
I come from a small European country and we were never made to learn the language of the bordering countries, but had a program where we could pick whatever language(s) we wanted to learn, and that (those) became a graded subject (s), and so had to be taken seriously.

no kids should not be forced to learn a language
they should choose if they want to or not
they won't really care or remember that well if they're forced
the U.S. should not have spanish as a second language because a LOT of other countries already speak spanish we need to keep english

Currenty I'm taking Spanish in school and it makes you more confident when around a Spanish speaker. But i do think it should remain a choice. Some people know that they won't use it where they live so they should be able to choose a different language.

Well, technically, there isn't a first language in America, as the US has no official language. But, no, children should not be required to learn a foreign language. I think foreign language requirements should be removed from public schools and colleges. I don't know how much it cost me to take two years of a foreign language for my B.A., but honestly it was a waste of money.
